Snowdrops

Matthew 4:1-11

- God speaks to us in clear and simple ways.

- When we feel stuck in negative thoughts, surrender to Him. He is waiting with love.

Malulabelle peeked out the window. A fresh, thin blanket of snow topped the ground. The sky was cloudy. It matched Malulabelle’s heart.

An argument with her friend, June, had her feeling sad and dreary. Malulabelle shared her thoughts with Jesus. “Jesus, I didn’t mean to fight with June. I snapped at her. She snapped at me. It wasn’t a good day. What can I do?”

She opened her eyes. Despite the clouds, the air was still. Malulabelle wrapped a blanket around her shoulders and stepped outside. She searched for little signs of life to lift her spirits. But no little squirrel friends or wintertime birds were out to play.

Turning back toward the door, something caught Malulabelle’s eye in a small patch of ground. She went in for a closer look.

A flower? Tiny, white, bell-shaped petals poked through the snow. “Snowdrops!” Malulabelle softly touched the stems. The delicate flowers seemed to be bowing their heads in prayer.

Malulabelle’s heart leaped. She pondered the moment. She had a new thought.

“Jesus, thank you for this unexpected gift of snowdrops! What a beautiful sign of hope and simple beauty. I know what to do with June; be clear and simple, like your lovely snowdrops.”

The next day, Malulabelle approached June. “June, I’m sorry how I treated you yesterday.”

June’s eyes smiled back. “I’m sorry, too.”

The two joined hands and skipped away to play in the snow.

Have you ever felt dreary and sad, like there was a cloudy day in your heart? Sometimes negative thoughts can keep us stuck in this feeling. God calls us to face our sadness and sin, to simply call out to Him for help. He will walk with us, and lighten our hearts.
