It was Malulabelle’s favorite time of the school day – recess! Her glittery tutu billowed as she darted to the playground. Today she was first on the slide. “Weee!” Friends clapped and cheered as she whizzed down. When Malulabelle circled back to climb the slide again – ‘Uh oh!’ – the waiting line stretched waaay back to the edge of the playground. ‘There is no way I can wait that long!’ She squeezed into the front of the line.
“Wait, it’s my turn!” said John.
“But the slide is my favorite, and I want to go again right away!” Malulabelle was certain she could climb the stairs now.
“I love the slide too. We all do! Look!” John pointed at all the boys and girls lined up single file. “You’ll have another turn, Malulabelle. You just need to wait.”
Malulabelle’s shoulders sank. She trudged to the back of the line. John was right, after all. And he was kind. Malulabelle closed her eyes and silently talked to Jesus. ‘Jesus, it’s hard to wait in line. What can I do?’
At that moment the sound of giggles and squeals came from friends slipping and sliding down the winding tube. Malulabelle opened her eyes, and she giggled too. Their happiness was contagious! She realized the slide was there for everyone. It was meant to be shared. And the more friends on the slide, the more fun and laughter there was to enjoy! ‘Thank you, Jesus.’
“Let’s go again!” John joined the line behind Malulabelle. They waited together, whooping and hollering as each friend dashed down the slide and ran back for their next turn.
The happiness Malulabelle felt seeing her friends having fun is like the love of Jesus. It’s contagious! When we choose to fill our hearts with God’s love, we can’t help but be joyful. Soon, that joy overflows in us, and spills out to be shared with others. Can you think of a person who makes you feel happy just by being around them? Perhaps you are that person to someone else!
