Malulabelle saw a flash of lightning outside her classroom window. Thunderclaps followed. BOOM! CRAAACK!
“Oh, not today!” Malulabelle whispered to Simon, her table partner. “If it rains, we can’t have our class Science Walk this afternoon.”
“Maybe it will stop,” encouraged Simon.
But during math, it rained.
At music lessons, it rained.
Soon it was lunchtime, and it rained more.
“I know what to do.” Malulabelle reached for Simon’s hand, and they prayed.
“Jesus, we are looking forward to our Science Walk outside today. We know rain is good, but can you give us a break in the clouds?” The friends hoped God heard their prayer. They waited.
But the clouds grew darker.
Malulabelle prayed again. “Please, Lord. Just for today.”
Rain beat harder on the window.
“Dear Jesus, can you please stop the rain?”
Thunder boomed and cracked.
By the end of the school day, the rain continued. Malulabelle felt discouraged. God had not answered her prayer.
The following day, sunshine poured through the classroom windows. An announcement was made - the Science Walk was on!
Everyone cheered and leaped into line to begin the outdoor adventure. Many discoveries were made: lots of wiggly worms and newly bloomed flowers, wet spider webs and centipedes, fresh animal tracks and shiny stones.
Malulabelle had a new thought. God did answer her prayer. “Simon, God gave us a gift! Without yesterday’s rain, we would not have found any of these treasures on our walk.” The friends joined hands once more. “Thank you, Jesus!”
Have you ever felt like God hasn’t answered your prayer? It can be hard to wait! But He is listening. He answers prayers in His time, not ours. Sometimes his answer is “not yet, little one” because he has something bigger planned for us. God teaches us to be persistent in prayer – to trust Him. To keep coming to Him with our thoughts and worries, our joys and asks.
