Little Gift

- Jesus offers the gift of the Holy Spirit. Receive this gift and grow in faith, hope, and love for God.
“I have something for you, Malulabelle.” Sofie offered a small cup to Malulabelle. It was filled with dirt.
“What’s this?” Malulabelle held the cup up to her eyes.
“Just a little gift I know you will like. I have one too! Water when it’s dry. Soon you’ll have a surprise.”
At home, Malulabelle placed the cup on her windowsill. Her heart felt as warm as the sunshine beaming through the window. She wanted to share her heart with Jesus.
‘Jesus, Sofie is a good friend. I did nothing special to deserve her gift. It’s not even my birthday. I’ll think of her every time I see this.’
Each day Malulabelle peeked in the cup. She prayed. She poured water when the soil was dry.
One morning, Malulabelle noticed something new. “A sprout!” Malulabelle and Sofie jumped up and down at recess. They both had a little surprise sprout on the same day.
“Keep watering and watching,” encouraged Sofie. Malulabelle giggled. To her, it was funny to think the surprise would keep surprising.
Malulabelle said goodnight to her little sprout each night. But nothing new happened for a long time. Had she missed the next surprise? At recess, Sofie didn’t seem to mind.
Malulabelle continued to water and peek... water and peek. At the end of one long day, Malulabelle reached for the cup for an extra peek. This time, something was different – a burst of yellowy orange petals peeked back! Malulabelle giggled again.
“A marigold!” This gave her a new thought. She shared her heart with Jesus again.
“Jesus, this marigold is a special surprise, thank you! I cared for it, even when it seemed nothing was happening. And it became as beautiful as the sun. Help me to see and take care of all the gifts you give me, especially the gift of my faith.”
Can you think of a time you received a gift that made your heart feel happy and loved, and as beautiful as a bright burst of marigold petals? This is how Jesus feels when we nurture the most special gift he offers us, the Holy Spirit. Ask God to fill you with the Holy Spirit and feel your soul bloom with His love.
