- God works through those who are humble in heart.
- When God calls us to lead, he will equip us with what we need in the moment.
Malulabelle gathered in the music room with the children’s choir before church. Today was special, and there was a buzz in the air. Sophie showed off a new necklace. Lauren wore her hair in braids. Jack and Connor had shiny new shoes. For weeks, the choir practiced brand new songs. Today was the day they would sing in front of the congregation for the first time. The highlight being, Caroline’s solo.
“Children, I have some unfortunate news.” Miss Mum entered the room in a fluster. It was not common to see her with a frown. “Caroline is home sick. May God bless her with a speedy recovery. That means, though, we’ll need a new soloist for today’s song.”
The room filled with murmur. Girls straightened their skirts. Boys brushed off their ties. Eyes darted from one person to the next.
Malulabelle scanned the other choir members. She decided she would nominate one of them for the solo.
“Malulabelle,” Miss Mum’s voice startled Malulabelle out of concentration. “How would you like to sing Caroline’s solo?”
Malulabelle’s eyes widened, “Me?!”
“Yes!” encouraged her friend James. “Malulabelle, you know all the words by heart.”
“You are the perfect choice!” offered Kylie.
Malulabelle was surprised. She hesitated. “Miss Mum, I don’t know if I am the right person. Are you sure you want me?”
“Malulabelle, you helped Caroline practice her solo many times. You are the most familiar with her part. And you have a beautiful voice. I know you can do it.”
Malulabelle looked at the others waiting for her response. She knew what to do. She closed her eyes, and prayed. Dear Jesus, I’m not feeling very brave, but I want to help where I can. Please be with me as I sing.
“Ok, Miss Mum. I’ll do it.”
The choir cheered. Friends patted Malulabelle on the back.
Miss Mum squeezed Malulabelle’s hand. “Thank you, dear. Caroline will be so happy you stepped in.”
At the time of the solo, Malulabelle’s voice rang out boldly. She sang all the correct notes, and remembered every word.
As she took her seat, Malulabelle felt a burst of love in her heart. She looked up to Jesus on the cross. Jesus, you gave me what I needed in that moment. Thank you.
Have you ever been asked to lead when you didn’t feel like a leader? Many times, God has called upon people who weren’t the fastest or smartest or the “best.” But He sees how we can serve Him in our own unique way. God can work through us when we least expect it. He will always give us what we need in the moment when we do His will. This week, pray for a humble heart, and to be aware of how God is calling you.
