- Being thankful keeps us present in the moment, and close to Jesus.
Malulabelle arrived at the soccer field for her big game. Her eyes squinted from the sun, and her cheeks were rosy from the crisp autumn air. It was a perfect day for soccer!
Malulabelle found her teammates and started warm-ups.
“Did you know the team we play is undefeated?” Marcy and Malulabelle passed the ball back and forth.
“Just like us!”
“Yeah! We can do this, Malulabelle! Let’s bring out our best today!”
Malulabelle looked across the field and spotted her friend, Libby, on the opposing team. Their eyes met and they exchanged a good-luck-wave. Malulabelle knew how much Libby loved soccer. But only one of them could walk away with the win. This gave Malulabelle a sinking feeling in her belly.
Trotting off the field, she knew what to do. A quick prayer was always the answer. “Dear Jesus, I’d really like to win this game. We’ve worked so hard to get here. But I know Libby has worked hard too. I don’t want to be worried about this…”
The teams lined up and it was nearly game time.
Malulabelle smelled popcorn and grilled burgers from the concession stand. She closed her eyes and listened to the whistles and cheers on the other fields. The grass under her cleats felt extra soft and squishy, which she loved. She smiled, and the sinking feeling in her belly went away. Instead, she felt joyful. This gave her a new thought. “Jesus, I’m so happy for this moment. The sun, fresh air, sights and sounds of soccer, and competing with my friends. This day is a gift from you. And I’m not going to miss it! Thank you, Jesus.”
Jesus tells us to “stay awake” and to “be ready!” He wants us to be aware of the gifts right in front of us, and not to worry. Even in tricky situations, there are blessings. Being ‘present’ and ‘thankful’ opens our hearts to receive God’s grace. This is a wonderful way to feel close to Jesus. What blessings are you grateful for at this moment?
